So it begins...

A few years back I was given one of the largest collections of anything I've ever seen; it consisted of ~20 boxes (with anywhere from 10-20 tapes per box) of cassette tapes. A friend of my grandparents had been recording these tapes for years, recording straight from different Jazz format radio stations. Along with the tapes he logged information in spiral notebooks about each song (i.e. Artist, style, song title, etc). He was in the midst of moving to a nursing home, so he had no desire to lug this collection with him. Some of the tapes he gave to a son, others he discarded because of their diminished quality, but the rest were mine. A year after I gave five of the boxes to my Jazz instructor in High School, but the rest remain mine (upwards of 10).

My goal is to digitize all of these tapes with as accurate information as I can provide (a daunting task with the shaky writing and iffy condition of the notebooks), and I plan to use this blog here to update and share information about the project, as well as some of the progress (files) that I make. I'll also need help from those who know more about this music's history when it comes to identifying troublesome names and titles. I have winter break approaching that lasts until the end of January, so if I stay motivated I hope to get as much done then as possible.
